Metastable States for an Aggregation Model with Noise

چکیده
We study the long-time effect of noise on pattern formation for the aggregation model. We consider aggregation kernels that generate patterns consisting of two delta-concentrations. Without noise, there is a one-parameter family of admissable equilibria that consists of two concentrations having whose mass is not necessary equal. We show that when small amount of noise is added, the heavier concentration “leaks” its mass towards the lighter concentration over a very long time scale, eventually resulting in the equilibration of the two masses. We use exponentially small asymptotics to derive the long-time ODE’s that quantify this mass exchange. Our theory is validated using full numerical simulations of the original model – both of the original stochastic particle system and its PDE limit. Our formal computations show that adding noise destroys the degeneracy in equilibrium solution and leads to a unique symmetric steady state.

Metastable behavior in Markov processes with internal states.
A perturbation framework is developed to analyze metastable behavior in stochastic processes with random internal and external states. The process is assumed to be under weak noise conditions, and the case where the deterministic limit is bistable is considered. A general analytical approximation is derived for the stationary probability density and the mean switching time between metastable st...

The dynamics of fast gas heating in a high power microwave discharge in air, is investigated in the framework of FDTD simulations of the Maxwell equations coupled with the fluid simulations of the plasma. It is shown that, an ultra-fast gas heating of the order of several 100 Kelvins occurs in less than 100 ns. The main role in the heating is played by the electron impact dissociation of , diss...

The structural transition of prion proteins from a native α-helix (PrPC) to a misfolded β-sheet-rich conformation (PrPSc) is believed to be the main cause of a number of prion diseases in humans and animals. Understanding the molecular basis of misfolding and aggregation of prion proteins will be valuable for unveiling the etiology of prion diseases. However, due to the limitation of convention...
متن کاملExtrinsic noise driven phenotype switching in a self-regulating gene.
Analysis of complex gene regulation networks gives rise to a landscape of metastable phenotypic states for cells. Heterogeneity within a population arises due to infrequent noise-driven transitions of individual cells between nearby metastable states. While most previous works have focused on the role of intrinsic fluctuations in driving such transitions, in this Letter we investigate the role ...
متن کاملAsymptotic and numerical methods for metastable events in stochastic gene networks
A general class of stochastic gene expression models with self regulation is considered. One or more genes randomly switch between regulatory states, each having a different mRNA transcription rate. The gene or genes are self regulating when the proteins they produce affect the rate of switching between regulatory states. Under weak noise conditions, the deterministic forces are much stronger t...
